Sooooo, Ive had an itch to get a Honda lately. Missed having my boosted crx so I decided to find another honda to mess around with. I came across this cleeeeeeeean eg coupe. the guy told me it had a rod knock, which didnt bother me at all because a honda with this little amount of rust is nearly impossible to find in this god forsaken state. Travis and I drove our happy asses to Hastings and picked her up. started it up and you could really only hear the rod knock in higher rpms....so I decided to risk it and attempt to drive it home in hopes of saving on a tow truck lol...bad idea hahaha. Got 38 miles from Hastings and the rod bearing completely dissolved. After Travis and I had a good laugh I called up AAA and got her towed the rest of the way. This was on Saturday that I got the car. Engine was out of the car on Tuesday and completely dissasembled last night. #1 cylinder rod bearing was the one that went. So, plans are to get the engine to the machine shop on Monday to get the block decked and mains polished, going to get a core crank thats already polished because mine is ovalled to hell as well as that particular rod. Putting ARP headstuds and rod bolts in, new oil pump, water pump, timing belt, head gasket, bearings, rings, and every other associated gaskets. I already have for it an EVO 8 16G, crx hf mani(my favorite mani set-up), dsm 450cc's and will be tuning on crome. Not going to turbo right away, ill just aquire parts over the next 2 or 3 months then do it one night I get bored. Anways, enough talking heres some pics of the progress
mmmmm
Ill get more pics of the interior soon, but that shit is mint
D16z6
The rust
Pulled oil pan to see what the damage was
lol...watch the video
Oil pan with all the metal shavings lol
Rebuild time
The tear down
Exhaust mani cracked in 3 spots lol
Thats most of it for now, Have a lot of parts hot tanked already and awaiting the machine shop on Monday. Ill keep it updated and as always feel free to post up what you think

Thanks man, playing this car by ear and available funds so we'll see what happens

just a suggestion, but a good d16z6 would pry be a better option.
a stock z6 is good for 350hp with correct tuning, so why not just dump in a good engine? there is one in lkq in a ex sedan with 120k right now fyi. $150.
another option is a used low milage jdm d15b for $400.
honda builds engines much better than a person can, in my opinion. i'd rather have a fresh stock engine to save the hassle. you could keep the old one and build it for turbo over time.
or for the ammount you're going to dump into this d16 you could get a fresh b16 swap, or put together a h2d or h22 full swap.

Honda does build damn good engines, however so do I
Im building this one because the reliability of my 0 mile engine will far exceed the reliability of a 120k mile LKQ junkyard engine thats been sitting outside with the hood open most of the time and random ass cats rummaging thru it. This will be my 3rd boosted Honda engine build. None of the 2 previous ones ever blew up, I had my boosted Accord for 2 1/2 years running 10 pounds daily.
The crank and rod are the only things that were not planned to replace when I bought the car. That head would have came off anyway for a head gasket within the month of me owning it just because. The block just gets some lovin, too.
I'll also feel better knowing I have new bearings, rings, and studs for boost

i hear ya, i'm just throwing out hard facts.
as for a 0 mile human built rebuild outlasting a factory honda engine in life? i highly doubt it. how many hondas do you see for sale with 200k on a built boosted engine? my del sol had a b18b with 240k that ran flawless. no leaks, no buring oil (exept from mulitple busted dsm turbos) and factory spec compression numbers.
what kind of numbers are you looking to get? evo3 16g on a z6 will max at 300-350 whp. you can those numbers reliably on 93 octane with a stock block and a good dyno tune, so why spend the money?
also, if you plan on even getting that kind of hp you need to spend the cash on software, a emulator, ostrich, and chip burner. those alone will run you atleast 700 bones.
so now that you've spent your 700 on software, are you going to trust yourself with street tuning on your newly built $800 single cam engine? good luck finding a reputable honda tuner in west michigan, and the only guys that tune on the west side only tune hondata. ($$$$$$)
if you lower the compression ratio you WILL need a dyno tune.
lots of people, (including glen and i) have had VERY fast hondas on dyno-tuned basemaps from xenocron. a stock z6 with a evo3 16g will make 300hp on the beerpongkicksass map. its tired and true. ......and best of all CHEAP!

i'm just sayin, i love the z6. its my favorite honda engine. they are more than capable little bastards in stock form.
it just seems that all the local mentality is that EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE BUILT to make hp. this isnt a dsm. hondas dont break. just drop in a new engine, get a tune and forget about it.
i love the color! honda tyler is going to be super jealous with you rolling around slammed on baller wheels with the same color coupe. lol

I would most definitely agree that a Honda built engine would outlast anything I built
The turbo I am using is an Evo 8 16G, which is a twin scroll turbo. Did some research and I can run the twin scroll w/out a twin scroll mani, it just runs the turbo as a normal turbo and you dont get the benefits of the twin scrolls quicker spool. This particular turbo is rated for much more than 300 hp, even tho thats not my intentions at all.
My CRX was tuned on crome, a buddy of mine chips and tunes ecu's w/ basemaps that are very legit. I had 2 different tunes from him (2 different ecu's) and both were spot on with the 2 different turbo set-ups. Its a very simple, cheap, and reliable way of tuning IMO. Ive never used xenocron, but I am definitely not tossing the idea. I will do my research, especially if you guys have used it.
Unless I find another engine for this that I trust enough to buy, I'm for sure rebuilding this one.

There still is capable cats around for tuning. Just gotta plead and beg. As for building or stock form. Ive seen more then enough human builds coming from True honda buddies out of Holland that held up for insane numbers and lasted. Shit even Gene and I have done some wierd stuff and ran awesome for as long as we know.
Shit, chai built a all motor b20 vtec in a 87 Crx that in the day thath had some of the quickest NA times at Nopi nationals and route 66. 10.2 i wanna say with all motor and maybe 240whp. Great tuning and building all done with my boys in holland.
Yes Honda built reliabilty from factory, But not always strength, Chad didnt mention i did go through a short block from knocking but also ran 12-14lbs daily and i beat I MEAN beat the piss out of it. As well as boost source Vac line came off on a hard pull which put the life to an end... Changed out block to a mini me with a d15 and it ran almost as good for another year, sold it and went to Route 66 and dude was running same engine that day.
Either way I love having a stock engine. There is no need to build one.
But cody truely isnt building it, just refreshening it, still using stock rods and pistons, just making it Fresh so at that the reliable pistons and rods are still in use.
As for xenocron....Ive used more maps off there then i can remember and the best so far as been the Beerpongkicksass.
With that tune and a stock z6 in a 91 standard hatch with full interior and 6 point certified cage and heavy traction bar on stock crx wheels with like 3/32 crap street tires spinning and feathering 1st, 2nd and lite spin into 3rd I was running mid 13's all day trapping right around 104-107. 60ft of crap.....2.1-2.3ish.

i remember you asked about xenocron tonight, and i dont thing glen or i gave you a definite answer.
its a website ran by grassroots honda diy tuners. xenocron.com. proven, tried and true tunes are available (for free) as .bin files that can be burned onto eprom chips.
if you have a socketed ecu you can just pop the chip out and swap in a chip that is burned to a xenocron chip. go on the website and check out all of the maps available for your setup. maps will have basic info, such as what engine, turbo, injectors, timing and fuel modifications etc...
most obd1 guys tune with crome or uberdata. i ran crome on my ef, but uberdata on my h22 coupe and my last del sol. uberdata seems to run more like stock. back when i used to tune hondas myself, i found that crome sometimes has weird idle problems.
i usually buy ebay ecu's from reputable sellers. my last build last summer i ran a p06 vtec converted ecu i bought from ebay from a good knowlegeable seller. i got the ecu for 130 bucks. the seller and i exchanged emails and i told him what .bin files i wanted burned to extra chips. i had the him burn me 4 chips with different b18b turbo basemaps.
i ran 2 of them mostly over the summer, and both worked flawlessly. i also had him modify my favorite tune with higher rev limit (7.5k), 2 step set to 2800k rpm, and +1* advance per psi of boost in the timing map. (incase i decided to run more boost than what the map was dyno tuned for)
all four chips and the ecu totalled 150 bucks. the maps on all 4 chips were flawless, but i mainly ran the map with the custom settings i wanted.
